Ceramics 1 Final

1. My beach tile was my most successful project. I created my tile by looking at a photograph of the beach at night and trying to replicate it. First I had to roll out clay and create the tile. Next I cutout clay to look like features of the beach scene. Then I glazed it with colors that were in the photograph and I blended the glazes of the sky together with water. For the technique to make the features of the beach scene I found that rolling out clay and cutting it to the shape of what I wanted was the easiest. I  found out that I needed to paint the edges of all my features with a pin tool in order to not get one glaze on another. This project was painstaking because I had to paint a lot using a pin tool which took a long time.

I had to overcome obstacles when creating my fruit goblet. My obstacles started when I didn't make my base thick enough and it became unbalanced and wasn't stable. To counteract the unbalance I had to be careful where I placed fruit so it wouldn't fall over. My second obstacle was my fruit became too dry and didn't stick together so I had to glue all of them once they were fired. This was hard because I had never had to glue a ceramic project and every time I tried to glue it the fruit would fall off. I figured out I had to set things against it so it would glue in a certain place. These obstacles made me a better artist because they taught me how to glue ceramic projects if they break and I learned that the base of a ceramic structure is very important.

I think my ancient vase showcases my growth as an artist well. I made it using the slab technique. I learned how to sponge glaze when I made it also. As you can see by the designs on the side, my painting got a lot better than previous projects. If you look at this vase compared to previous artwork I made, you can see how much I've grown as an artist in this class. My tile was one of my favorite projects. I really grew as an artist because I was able to be creative and pick what I wanted my tile to be. I think because I got to pick what my tile was, I worked harder on it and cared if it looked better than my other projects.

I really like that in this class I was able to choose what I wanted to make most of the time. I thought this method of teaching was really effective because when I got to have more choice in my work, I worked harder on it and cared more about it. I thought my spaghetti box was a good representation of a personal choice I was able to make. Getting to chose what food we wanted our boxes to be I believe made me have more pride in my work. I really liked this project but I wish I would have had more experience with Ceramics when I made it. This method helped my learn better because when I wanted to make certain things I had to get better at certain techniques and got better at ceramics.
